Zipho and Zimasa celebrated their traditional wedding in the small, picturesque village of Newtown (next to Qunu) in the Transkei, which has a backdrop of gentle, meandering hills and valleys. You will find sheep and goats grazing among traditional round huts and women cooking up a storm, preparing tasty meals in large potjie pots on open fires. This is where Zipho grew up and I can only imagine him as a young boy, running through those green fields and having stick fights with his friends and enjoying the thrill of the occasional train passing through. The rail tracks are just 100m away. This day was one Leigh and I will always remember fondly. There was so much excitement and energy that filled the air. Zimasa and Zipho walked down the dusty pathway together, with such enthusiasm, with their bridal party, friends, family and local villages after them and trying to keep up. Once they arrived at Zipho’s family home next door, Zimasa changed into her traditional wedding outfit. She and her handsome groom were perfectly co-ordinated in stunning ethnic attire, white and black, with stunning beaded accessories on their heads and necks. They even wore matching sandals. We did a bit of exploring and chatted to the cooks at the back of the house who eagerly shared their secret recipes and tips with Leigh, while I went off in search of puppies and keeping the local children entertained. Zipho’s colleagues from Sweden attended both their traditional and western weddings, I was happy to see that they donned some traditional attire too. The men and women looked gorgeous in their colorful outfits, headgear and beaded accessories. Zimasa and Zipho, thank you for entrusting me to capture your memories and a special thanks also to your mom and aunts who welcomed Leigh and I into your home and ensured that we enjoyed some home made bran muffins and ginger beer. When Leigh and I travelled back to East London, we chatted non stop about how much we enjoyed being a part of your happy celebrations. Next time I capture a traditional wedding I will definitely be donning a pretty beaded accessory – Leigh too!
